How to build links without getting penalized?

Written on September 20, 2007 – 2:47 pm | by aditya |

Well a lot of time already since i have posted on a topic related to SEO / Internet Marketing. I was actually exited about the TechCrunch40 conference. But now lets get back to the very thing i am made up of , SEO.

This is actually a topic i wanted to write on from many days, its all about how to build links without getting Penalized ?

I ( and many other SEO pros, friends, business partners and the SEO Community as a whole ) have realized over time that link building is something which has to be done with great care. If you are asking why should we do that then you have to go back to the very origins of the Search Engines. The principle they rely on. Search Engines like Google was created to return relevant results to the users. So their main objective even today remains to list the best and highest and the most relevant sites on the top of the search results. For this they use a variety of parameters and the number of back links (links pointing to it from other websites ) a site has is one of the parameters. If a site A links to site B , it is like the site A saying “Yeah … site B is good” . Google treats them like votes. So if a site has many number of backlinks from other sites, its like many people saying yes the site is good and hence it is ranked well in the search engines. But along with the progress and commercialization of the web, people started to buy links from relevant sites (buying votes in a election). Search Engines do not like purchasing links actually. They want the links to come naturally. But in practical it is something difficult to realize, hence people buy links.

BUT, in the recent times the Search Engines like Google have made their algorithm smart enough to catch paid links and devalue them. If you go on buying tons of links blindly, you will be busted. If you buy hundreds of links to new site thinking to rank high, you will be burned down. They still want people to acquire links naturally rather than paid methods. So the only way left for us is to build links and make it seem natural to the spiders. How we do this ? Its not that difficult , but you have to keep certain points in mind while buying links. Some of the points listed below are worth following -

1. Never buy sitewide links. If you buy for traffic, then nofollow them.

2. Buy links at a slow speed. Dont buy 100 links 1 day then stop for a month. Buy 2 links every day.

3. Dont buy links **only** from high PR sites.

4. Buy contextual links - Links embedded in between relevant text.

5. Don’t get links from link farms or pages which have 100 other links (Link Exchange pages never help)

6. Try to buy links from relevant sites - Hard to follow , but they are more valuable than non relevant site’s links.

7. Try to get links to internal pages of your site rather than only homepage.

Start your campaign with low PR links and slowly move up.

Have a great day ! !

Hi. Just subscribed to your feed - liking the site very much.

Anyway - for my first comment. With regards to site-wide links, it very easy for search engines to spot these and discount them as paid links. I do still think they’re worth having - as long as the site isn’t a) Too large, b) Full of crappy links or c) Well known for selling links.

I include ‘too large’ as I’ve had a few experiences with paid links (site wide) that killed my listings. Once I removed the link and the pages were eventually spidered again - hey presto - listings returned.
