Using wordpress to build content based sites.

Written on November 18, 2006 – 7:21 pm | by aditya |

Wordpress is a well known blogging platform used by bloggers worldwide. Even the blog you are reading currently has been powered by wordpress. It provides excellent level of customisation which allows you to create practically any type of blog.

From quite sometime i have been working to create some good health related content based websites. So i was thinking that instead of spending time on writing core HTML code as i did for my earlier websites, why not use wordpress as a CMS and modify it well so that it looks like a website rather than a blog. Well i tried and succeded.
Here is all what i did with wordpress.

  • Removed PHP code which fetches the posts from database on homepage and put my own content HTML source.
  • Removed Archives, Categories, and Posts from sidebar. Put adsense there and put pages list on top of adsense.
  • All content pages of the site can be created from Write Pages in WP admin.
  • Created Posts with name Link Partners. It wont be visible on homepage as i have removed Posts category menu and The code to display posts on homepage. Hence i place a link to the link partners posts below the adsense block on homepage.

Hence by doing these things i converted Wordpress from a blogging platform to a powerful CMS through which i could manage content based websites.
